Baltic Human Rights Education Conference

The first Baltic Human Rights Education Conference took place in Riga in 2015. It was organized by the Baltic Human Rights Society in collaboration with the Riga Graduate School of Law and the Republic of Latvia’s Ministry of Education and Science and the support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy in Latvia. The conference was the first event of its kind in the Baltics, which brought together representatives of the state, the non-governmental and academic sectors with the goal of focussing attention on the significance of human rights education in the protection of human rights and facilitating collaboration between the state and non-governmental organizations in the Baltic region.

The conference served as a forum for the exchange of experience for human rights practitioners, policymakers and academics from the Baltic region, to:

  • commence discussion about an understanding of comprehensive human rights education
  • clarify the importance of human rights education at all levels for improving the protection of human rights
  • introduce and promote dialogue and collaboration between the state and the non-government sector for developing human rights education through the development of a sustainable and coordinated strategy, the development of understanding within society, the development of a teaching programme and support of existing initiatives
