Since 2018, the Cilvektiesibas.info portal has been operating under the auspices of the Baltic Human Rights Society. Cilvektiesibas.info is a non-profit platform for human rights news, opinion and thematic articles. It brings together professionals, academics, students, non-governmental organisations and state institutions with the aim of informing the public about human rights issues and events of importance to Latvia at both national and international level, covering both legislation and events as well as publications, opinion pieces and interviews. Since its creation, the portal has covered a wide range of topics, following current events in Latvia and worldwide. Over the past year, our reporters have been particularly successful in adding new authors and institutional partners to the portal, which has also enabled the range of articles to expand significantly.
In August 2022, the content management of the portal was taken over by its Editor-in-Chief Ieva Šņepste, under whose supervision it has continued to grow and expand very successfully. Since the beginning of 2022, 28 new authors and 2 institutional partners have joined the portal.
This has enabled them to actively follow current affairs and cover a wide range of topical issues - environmental and climate issues, media and freedom of expression, equality and social inclusion in society, LGBTQ+ rights, data protection, the consequences of the energy crisis, migration issues, the independence of the judiciary and many others. As part of our commitment to the people of Ukraine and to follow developments around the world, we have created a special series of articles dedicated to events in Ukraine.
In the summer of 2022, for the first time, a young professionals' writing competition was organised in cooperation with the Ombudsman's Office "Let Human Rights Speak!" (Ļauj Cilvēktiesībām runāt!). This gave interested individuals the opportunity to compete, develop and also get involved in the preparation of articles to be published on the portal. The competition will be held again in summer 2023. The portal has also been expanded with new content: in cooperation with the Riga Graduate School of Law, the portal is developing a "Conversations" section. In it, people active in the field of human rights share their experiences, insights and impressions.
