New topic on Family Support Mechanisms for the Human Rights Guide

The Human Rights Guide is a free online platform for human rights education and self-help. It aims to help people understand human rights in different situations by explaining them through themes. The Guide not only helps people to learn about human rights and understand their basic issues, but also to assess whether a possible human rights violation has occurred and what to do about it. The Guide is also aimed at professional users whose work involves the application of human rights. It also serves as an aid to human rights learning for students and human rights trainers.
This winter, a new section on Family Support Mechanisms has been added to the Guide. The family, the basic unit of society, has the right to adequate social, legal and economic protection to ensure its existence and development. This right falls under a special category of human rights known as economic and social rights. This right obliges the State to create and maintain a system of social security and support for families, including children, parents and other persons caring for children.
The new section explains the basic principles of a family social security and support system and briefly describes the social benefits available in Latvia. This section is part of the Human Rights Guide's larger topic on family, which explains the concept of "family", the rights and responsibilities you have as a spouse, parent or child, and situations where your reproductive rights may be violated.
The Human Rights Guide also covers topics such as data and privacy, freedom of expression and the media, and other topical issues. The Guide also provides information on institutions and organisations that protect human rights in Latvia and Europe, explaining in particular how individuals can turn to them for help.
